Thought for our times, the year 2020

By Neda Dorudi: These are strange and troubling times, the unimaginable has brought our world to a temporary freeze, the spread of a virus, is creating a picture we didn’t expect and find alien, but the milk of human kindness is alive and well, and our profound deep human qualities, are in full force right now. Countless tales of selflessness and kindness have tipped the balance towards hope and encouragement. Doomsday theories are prevalent in our social media circles, is this the end of days, have we gone too far? I stop and reflect about this topic every day, and conclude that the situation here and now is ushering a warning, and I realise that humanity cannot hope to preserve the planet and keep it out of harm’s way without an imminent change of direction, the creation of a new path, in our existence , a big task ahead, especially for the next generation, but success is achievable, as long as the torch of awareness stays lit. The need to honour our commitment for the protection and preservation of our fragile planet and show kindness and respect for all living creatures great and small. Expressions of compassion and solidarity exhibit the core of our human values. We will be victorious in our conquest over this virus and other difficulties. We are all students of life, and earthlings, our world is full of miraculous and magnificent scenes, and time is the most precious gift of all, use it wisely it runs out quickly, never to be given back again.

Some inspiration from wise men and their philosophy and quotes:

Sir Isaac Newton the Mathematician, physicist, astronomer, wrote this about God.

“His presence from infinity to infinity…. He governs all things and knows all things that are or can be done. He is not eternity and infinity, but eternal and infinite; he is not duration or space, but he endures and is present. He endures forever, and is everywhere present; and, by existing always and everywhere, he constitutes duration and space. The most beautiful system of the sun, planets, and comets could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful Being…He is omnipresent not virtually only, but also substantially; for virtue cannot subsist without substance. In him are all things contained and moved. “

Words that awaken my thoughts about the omnipresence of God, and the enormity of our Universe. One of the greatest Persian poets, Hafiz is another source of inspiration, his poetry is enlightening and uplifting transporting the reader to another realm. Below are some of my favourites.

I Have Learned So much from God That I can no longer Call Myself A Christian, a Hindu, a Muslim A Buddhist, a Jew. The Truth has shared so much of itself with me That I can no longer call myself A man, a woman, an angel, Or even pure Soul. Love has Befriended Hafiz so completely It has turned to ash and freed Me Of every concept and image My mind has ever known.

Write a thousand luminous secrets Upon the wall of existence So that even a blind man will know Where we are and join us in this love!

Even After All this time the sun never says to the earth, “You Owe Me.” Look What happens With a love like that, It lights the Whole Sky.

I hear the voice Of every creature and plant, Every world and sun and galaxy—- Singing the Beloved’s Name!
